Coming into this week, the Coast Union Lady Broncos are 4-0 and in first place in the Coast Valley League (CVL), having dominated teams in the CVL in preparation for their playoff chances after their final regular season game on May 16.

Assistant coach Toby Cinque notes that before the team enters the playoffs the Lady Broncos need to “get much better at playing small ball … bunting runners over and stealing bases effectively.”

To be ready for the more talented teams that they will play in the post-season, Cinque also says the Lady Broncos need to improve on defending small ball. “Right now we are giving the other team too many outs. We need to execute simple plays and just be able to play catch in the game,” he said.

Cinque’s point is well taken because the softball team has scored well against lesser teams (18-1 against Coastal Christian; 18-0 versus Cuyama Valley; and 21-0 against Alpaugh); so an error here or there hasn’t hurt them. But in tight games against really good teams, an error could cost Coast the game.

“In playoffs the stakes get much higher,” he explains. “Better teams will not give you room to make errors.”

The next home game for Coast Union is Friday, April 25, against Maricopa, a team that has yet to win a game this year.
