The effects of drought conditions at Atascadero Lake will be the focus of a community forum Thursday.

The talk, hosted by the city, will also discuss a volunteer lake cleanup day planned for May 31 as well as new potential programs to manage the lake's water, plants and birds.

The city-owned lake, connected to Atascadero Creek and dependent on rain, has suffered ongoing hot-weather problems that came to a head in September after an estimated 3,000 fish died from oxygen deprivation in the warm, shallow waters.

The public can bring ideas for how to improve the lake through the help of specific projects, fundraising and volunteers. City officials have previously said it would be too costly to purchase water to fill the lake.

Representatives from the city, Friends of Atascadero Lake, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Atascadero Mutual Water Co. and local environmental professionals will be at the meeting, according to a city news release.

The meeting is planned for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pavilion on the Lake, 9315 Pismo Ave. Those with questions can call the city's public works department at 470-3180.
