Lauren Moreno singled through the left side of the infield with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to score Maria Cochiolo as the Cal Poly softball team salvaged a split in Tuesday’s doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield by winning the nightcap 1-0 at Bob Janssen Field.

The Mustangs lost the first game 7-5.

Cochiolo started the ninth with a two-out single up the middle before Monroe lined into left field and Cochiolo slid under the attempted tag of the Roadrunners’ catcher for the winning run.

Cal Poly’s Sierra Hyland struck out seven in eight innings of one-hit softball. Chloe Wurst pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win.

Cal Poly led the first game 3-0 when Kim Westlund tripled home Cami Brown in the fourth.

But Bakersfield scored five innings in the sixth before Cal Poly (26-17) was able to tie it at 5 in the seventh on a two-run single by Hyland.

A Cal Poly error led to one of two runs for Bakersfield in the eighth. The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, but Jillian Andersen struck out and Emily Ceccacci grounded out to end the game.
