GOP blocks progress

Arroyo GrandeApril 21, 2014

It’s easy to become complacent, apathetic or downright cynical about the rampant dysfunction of our national politics. Congressional Republicans criticize everything and accomplish nothing, while endlessly pursuing scandals that do not exist and ignoring popular issues such as raising the minimum wage, ensuring pay equity for women, immigration reform and putting people to work rebuilding our failing infrastructure. The president can only accomplish so much with executive orders in the face of unrelenting opposition from Congress.

The only branch of government that operates on its own timeline is the Supreme Court, but recent decisions by Republican-appointed justices that money is speech, corporations are people and voting should be more difficult (in an effort to combat the nonexistent problem of voter fraud) are an affront to democracy and grease the skids of our descent into an oligarchy.

If the current GOP had been around in the 1960s, they would have scoffed at the challenge of going to the moon and been happy to just stand outside and howl at it.
