Letter to the Editor

Pounding the table

AtascaderoApril 21, 2014

Where has fairness and logic gone? People can justify almost anything in the name of politics these days. A recent letter writer tells us we must be prudent and wise and speak with care, lest our opinions demean or offend her. She calls conservative opinions illinformed or prejudiced. What should we call hers?

Recently, George Will, a brilliant commentator in my mind, quoted a saying, “If you have the law on your side, argue the law. If you have the facts on your side, argue the facts. If you have neither, pound the table.” I believe many people spend time pounding that table into dust. Intellectual poverty at its best.

Another letter vilified Kathleen Parker for defending the Koch brothers while the writer completely ignored the Hollywood elite’s pouring of vast wealth into the coffers of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but that’s OK.

Is there a thought about the money the Kochs donate to hospitals and charities? Joe Biden donates almost nothing to aiding others while collecting his Social Security, and Al Gore has made a fortune from global warming while selling his TV station to a business in an oil state in the Middle East. Can we say hypocrite?
