College Notebook: Local talent shines in college golf event

Cal Poly's Martin of Arroyo Grande High ties for fourth; UC Davis' Hansen of Morro Bay High claims individual title at El Macero Classic

Cal Poly’s Mitchell Martin carded a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish with a 1-over 217 total and tie for fourth place individually in the El Macero Classic on Sunday at El Macero Country Club in El Macero.

Martin, a freshman from Arroyo Grande High, led the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish with a team total of 887.

Also for the Mustangs, Camden Price tied for 17th with a 223 total, Justin De Los Santos and Cole Nygren tied for 27th with a 226 total, and Jordan Wright tied for 45th with a 230 total.

UC Davis standout and Morro Bay High product Matt Hansen won the individual title with a 6-under total of 210, leading the Aggies to the team crown with an 856 total.

Ex-Poly star U’u wins hoops title

PERTH, Australia — American-born forward Shawn Redhage scored 16 points, and former Vanderbilt guard Jermaine Beal added 15 as the Perth Wildcats beat the Adelaide 36ers 93-59 in the third and deciding game to win their record sixth National Basketball League championship.

Perth also showcases former Cal Poly standout guard Drake U’u.

Beal won Most Valuable Player of the series. He played previously in the NBA Development League and on teams in Poland, Belgium and Brazil.

The previous games were all close — Perth won the opener 92-85 before Adelaide leveled the series with an 89-84 win.
