College Roundup: Hancock tops Cuesta in softball

A four-run sixth inning by Allan Hancock College broke open a tie score as the Cuesta College softball team lost 6-2 in Santa Maria on Thursday night.

The Cougars struck first as Monica Garcia scored on a single by Delaney Furnish before the Bulldogs answered with one of their own in the bottom of the first.

Cuesta (26-13, 13-5 Western State Conference) regained the lead in the fourth inning on a single by Mikala Strum that scored Summer Best.

But Hancock followed with five unanswered runs, including a three-run home run in the sixth.

The Bulldogs (24-13, 13-3) clinched a share of the program’s first conference title since 1998.

Hillis moves up in Cal Poly track history

Cal Poly’s Mary Hillis finished 13th in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10 minutes, 47.65 seconds at the Mt. SAC Invitational. 

Her mark moves her up to number four all time in school history.
