When Sophie Flemion graduated from Coast Union in 2012 with an impressive inventory of achievements and awards and joined the Cal State Bakersfield varsity volleyball team, little did anyone who followed her career imagine she would be digging in the sand two years later.

But there she was in Hermosa Beach on Sunday, April 13, with her CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball partner Sydney Haynes, reaching the semifinals in the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge Pairs Tournament. After defeating teams from UCLA and Loyola Marymount to get to the semifinals, Flemion and Haynes were defeated by a pair from Pepperdine, according to a news release from CSU Bakersfield.

While at CUHS, Flemion was named CIF “Player of the Year” in the Southern Section for 2011.  She was also named to the All-SLO County First Team in 2011; CUHS Female Athlete of the Year in 2010-2011; Coast Valley League MVP in 2010; and was named team MVP in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
