The San Luis Obispo County Arts Council, Arts Obispo, is seeking nominations for a San Luis Obispo County poet laureate to “act as an ambassador of … literary arts and inspire a new generation of writers,” according to an Arts Obispo news release.

The nonprofit is taking over the reins from the San Luis Obispo Poetry Festival, which had coordinated the poet laureate program since 1999. Jerry Douglas Smith is currently serving as San Luis Obispo poet laureate.

Nominees for poet laureate must be residents of San Luis Obispo County, have a significant body of published and unpublished works, and be able to represent the county at various events such as Arts Obispo’s Poetry Out Loud recitation competition, the news release said.

The poet laureate will serve a two-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2015.

Nominations must be received by June 30.
