All a person needs to know about the contest between tiny Shandon’s baseball team and Coast Union’s squad Friday, April 4, is that the Broncos had 19 hits and the Outlaws were held hitless by Coast’s hurler Quentin Raethke. Only three Outlaw batters reached base (all on walks) and Raethke struck out 13 in five innings.

The score (19-0) is not surprising given the fact that Shandon is a very small school with just 95 students.  Last season Shandon went 0-10; two seasons ago Shandon didn’t have enough boys to form a team; and three seasons ago Shandon went 2-6.

Hence, the team has won two games in the last four years, but give credit to the student athletes who do come out for Outlaw sports against the odds they face when they play bigger schools with stronger sports programs like Coast Union (240 students).

Meanwhile in that April 4 game junior Jake McAvoy went three-for-three; senior Tommy Howard had two hits and scored two runs; sophomore Lane Sutherland had four hits and scored three; senior Raethke had four hits and drove in six runs; and senior Emmany Godinez picked up three hits and scored four runs.

Coming into this week senior Gehrig Kniffen leads the team with a .571 batting average; Sutherland is hitting .484; Godinez is at .450; Raethke is batting .429; and McAvoy is hitting at a .412 clip.

As to Coast Union’s dominance against teams in the Coast Valley League — the Broncos lead the CVL, 4-0 —  the four games the Broncos have played in league thus far have come out in Coast Union’s favor, 64-8.

The eight runs against the Broncos were scored at Coastal Christian when Coach Brian Machado decided to insert his reserves, but after Coastal Christian caught up Machado put his starting varsity team back in and the Broncos dominated, 21-8.

Tuesday, April 8, the Broncos defeated Cuyama Valley 19-5 as Grant Magnuson ripped a grand-slam home run, Sergio Mendoza went three for four and Zander Stoothoff added two hits. Raethke struck out 13 batters for the win.

The next Bronco home game is at 3:30 p.m. April 22 against King City.
