College Roundup: Fifth inning dooms Cuesta in loss

The Cuesta College baseball team committed two errors with two outs in the fifth inning, allowing Ventura to score four runs and defeat the Cougars 7-4 in San Luis Obispo on Thursday.

Cuesta (8-22, 4-13 Western State Conference) scored two runs in the fourth inning as David Belt doubled home Nick Burnham and Nick Rutckyj to tie the score at 2 before the
Pirates (11-18, 7-10 WSC) scored on an error and a three-run home run in fifth.

The Cougars added another run in the sixth when Belt scored on a fielder’s choice.

Belt was 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run, and Burnham was 3 for 3 with two walks and a run.

Cuesta softball falls out of first place

The Cuesta College softball team fell to second place in the Western State Conference standings after losing 5-2 at home to Santa Barbara City College.

The Cougars (24-12, 11-4) scored one run in the bottom off the first inning on an RBI groundout by Jeananne Ruck, and Summer Best scored on an error in the fourth to narrow the score to 3-2.

Santa Barbara added two insurance run in the fifth to hold off Cuesta.

Bennett third after decathlon first day

Cal Poly’s Devin Bennett is in third place overall after the first day of the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge Decathlon at Sacramento State with a score of 3,543 points.

Bennett ran the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 11.59 seconds and posted a mark of 21 feet, 93⁄4 inches in the long jump.

Teammates Ivan Adair (3,457), Ted Scranton (3,412) and Nick Ahrold (3,287), who hold the fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.

Nevin Lewis of Portland State leads with 3,851 points.
