Cal Poly’s University Police Department is investigating an attempted sexual battery and assault reported Tuesday night.

An unidentified suspect attacked a female student outside Cerro Vista Apartments in a commons area around 10 p.m. The man grabbed the woman and reached under her skirt, apparently attempting to pull down her underwear, University Police Department Chief George Hughes said.

The woman screamed and fought him off, kicking and pushing him away before he fled. The woman didn’t sustain any injuries.

Hughes said police are searching for a man described as tall with short black hair, wearing blue jeans and a dark gray hoodie striped with thin blue, vertical lines.

There were no nearby surveillance cameras but police are reviewing other cameras in the area to see if the suspect appeared on any footage.

Anyone with information is asked to call the university’s police department at 756-2281 or make an anonymous tip by calling 549-7867 (STOP) or sending a text to 274637 (CRIMES), stating SLOTIPS plus the message.
