Mitigate climate change

San Luis ObispoApril 2, 2014

As a concerned citizen with the San Luis Obispo chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby, I believe my newspaper needs to be talking about what many recognize as the best way to get a handle on runaway and accelerating atmospheric carbon loading — namely, the appropriate pricing of carbon energy. A revenue-neutral carbon fee must be levied nationally. As aleader in this effort, the United States would stand tall in exemplifying the carbon fee approach for others to follow.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change just released a report stating that the damaging effects of climate change are already being felt worldwide, and conditions will only worsen if we do not reduce our greenhouse-gas emissions. The IPCC assesses the scientific, technical and socioeconomic information relevant to the understanding of the risk of human-induced climate change.

According to its report, we as a nation must put ourselves on an immediate track to mitigate climate change. The longer we wait to transition away from burning fossil fuels, the more drastic the necessary actions will be. Some leaders have already spoken out, comparing climate change to a weapon of mass destruction.
