Cal Poly freshman Sierra Hyland, shown during a 7-0 home win over Stony Brook during the Mustang Classic on March 7, was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the fourth time.

Sierra Hyland, the Cal Poly softball team’s freshman phenom, continued to garner conference accolades Monday, when she collected her team-record fourth Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honor.

Hyland tossed a perfect game Saturday in the Mustangs’ conference opener against Cal State Northridge and struck out a total of 21 batters in the 26 innings she pitched in the series, in which Cal Poly won two of three.

Hyland ranks sixth in the country among Division I pitchers with 180 strikeouts, and is seventh and eighth in victories (17) and shutouts (seven), respectively. She’s allowed 4.11 hits per seven innings and owns an ERA of 1.66.

Hyland’s 180 strikeouts trail only Desarie Knipfer’s 253 in 1998 for the most by a Cal Poly pitcher in a single season.

Hyland is also third on the team in batting average, hitting .321.

The Mustangs (20-12, 2-1 Big West) continue their conference schedule with a three-game series Saturday and Sunday at UC Santa Barbara (21-12, 1-2).

Hansen finishes strong at Stanford tourney

Morro Bay High graduate and UC Davis senior Matt Hansen shot a 5-under 65 on Sunday to lead the Aggies to a 10th-place finish at The Goodwin, a tournament played at the Stanford Golf Course.

Hansen finished a team-best 20th at 1 over for the tournament, shooting 73 in both of the first two rounds before Sunday’s 65 — one shot off his career-best round.

Hansen has shot in the 60s in 10 of his 24 rounds this season, and the former Pirate is tied for 10th nationally with an average score of 70.19, according to the college golf website

Stanford won the event and had the medalist, Patrick Rodgers.

Cal Poly baseball continues to climb

The Cal Poly baseball team continued its climb in major Division I polls this week after sweeping a conference-opening series at home against UC Davis.

The Mustangs (23-4) stayed at No. 5 in both the Perfect Game and Baseball America rankings, but were bumped up two spots by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper to No. 7, three spots to No. 7 by USA Today/ESPN and three spots to No. 6 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America.

Cal Poly hosts CSU Bakersfield (11-15) tonight and UC Santa Barbara for a three-game Big West series Friday through Sunday.
