College Roundup: Fierro swims at NCAA meet

Sophomore is 42nd in 200-yard freestyle prelim heat, set to swim in his premier event today

Cal Poly sophomore Sonny Fierro finished 42nd in a time of 1 minute, 37.87 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle preliminary heats at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas on Friday.

Fierro will swim in the 1,650 freestyle today.

Cuesta track and field competes at WSC meet

Riley Cooks won the long jump to help the Cuesta College women’s track and field team finish second at its home Western State Conference meet in San Luis Obispo.

Cooks won with a jump of 18 feet, 1 3⁄4 inches, and teammate Priscilla Kluis came in second at 18-0.

The Cougars won five other events and finished the day second out of six teams with 158 points, behind Ventura’s 164.5.

PJ Mitchell was the only athlete from the men’s team to win an event, winning the shot put at 40-1 1⁄2.

The men finished in last out of five teams with 102 points.
