College Roundup: Cuesta baseball downs rival Allan Hancock

Cougars break out with season-high 12 hits in 11-7 Western State Conference win

With a season-high 12 hits, the Cuesta College baseball team upended rival Allan Hancock, which entered the week ranked ninth in Southern California, with an 11-7 victory Thursday.

Cougars sophomore Myles Franklin led the offense, going 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI. David Belt was also 2 for 5 with two RBI for Cuesta (6-18, 2-9 Western State Conference).

Reliever Cameron Trichka earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five in four innings of relief.

Cal Poly swimmer Fierro opens NCAAs

Cal Poly swimmer and Arroyo Grande High graduate Sonny Fierro finished his first of three events in the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championships 44th in the 500-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 4 minutes, 23.14 seconds.

Fierro was 3.64 seconds off his career-best, school-record mark set at the Pac-12 Conference Championships.

Fierro is also entered in today’s 9 a.m. 200 freestyle prelim and 1,650 freestyle, his premier event, at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
