THE CAMBRIAN

The Cambrian is a finalist for the top award in its division in the annual California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers Contest, it learned Wednesday, March 26, as well as two other prestigious awards.

Winners of first or second place were notified. Final placings will be announced May 3 in San Jose.

The Cambrian’s two-person news staff of managing editor Bert Etling and reporter Kathe Tanner made the final cut in the 4,300-and-under circulation in the weekly division for General Excellence. Judging criteria include general news coverage, breadth of coverage, story selection and quality of writing.

Tanner’s series of stories on the controversy over the rough surface left by Caltrans’ resurfacing of Highway 1 north of Cambria and its impact on bicyclists and others earned the judges’ nod for the Coverage of Local Government plaque.

Etling’s page layout, headline writing and photo editing was judged among the top two in the Best Page Layout & Design (Tabloid) category that included weekly newspapers with up to 11,000 circulation.

“It’s extremely gratifying to be recognized by our journalistic peers,” Etling said. “The community is very supportive, and it’s great to have that validated by professionals in the field. It re-energizes us as we continue to try and find ways to further improve our coverage to better serve our readers.”
