Welfare vs. welfare

San Luis ObispoMarch 26, 2014

According to The Tribune, the county is pledging $210,000 for a revenue guarantee so that a major airline can provide direct air service to Denver, (Airport officials, SkyWest to discuss proposed route, March 20). All of the major airlines have annual revenues several times that of the county budget.

To within a few thousand dollars, $210,000 is the same amount of money it would take to raise the standby pay rate for county child welfare social workers to the minimum wage. This would be the first increase in the standby pay rate in over 15 years.

If the county budget has sufficient funding for corporate welfare, it has sufficient funding to pay the minimum wage.
