Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande routs Atascadero in PAC 7 baseball opener

Defending league champs roll to 19-3 win over Atascadero

Ryan Teixeira was 3 for 4 and hit a two-run home run as the Arroyo Grande High baseball team began its league title defense with a resounding 19-3 road victory at Atascadero on Tuesday in the PAC 7 opener for both teams.

Garrett Ball, Joey DeLaRosa and Casey Muth each collected a pair of hits for the Eagles
(3-3), and Muth also scored four runs.

Mikey Gutierrez pitched five innings for Arroyo Grande, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out five.

Kelton Torres was 2 for 3 for the Greyhounds (2-4).

Paso Robles 2, Pioneer Valley 2, 10 innings, tie

Both teams scored once in the first inning and again in the third, but couldn’t push another run across in the next seven frames.

Bailey Gaither doubled and scored both runs for the Bearcats (4-0-2, 0-0-1 PAC 7), and Jonathan Baldwin drove in a run.

Paul Anderson and Martin Salas both pitched four innings, and Baldwin threw the final two for Paso Robles, combining to strike out nine.

Santa Ynez 13, Morro Bay 5

Elijah Garcia was 3 for 3 for the Pirates (0-7, 0-2 Los Padres League).

Coast Union 12, Maricopa 0, 5 innings

Lane Sutherland was 4 for 4 with a double and two RBI for the Broncos (4-2, 1-0 Coast Valley League).

Jake McAvoy and Tommy Howard both had two hits for Coast Union, and McAvoy struck out six in four innings on the mound.


Arroyo Grande 11, St. Joseph 4

Kacie Burger was 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs and five RBI to lead the Eagles to a win in their PAC 7 opener. 

Sam Oliver was 3 for 5 and drove in two runs for Arroyo Grande (5-4), and Rebekah Hernandez struck out four in six innings.

Pioneer Valley 10, San Luis Obispo 0, 5 innings

Megan Norris and Janae Caldera both singled for the Tigers (4-5, 0-1 PAC 7).

Morro Bay 8, Santa Ynez 6

Madelynn Martinez drove in four runs, including a three-run home run in the first inning, for Morro Bay (6-6, 2-0 LPL).

Marissa Tabares pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits while striking out nine.

Coast Union 22, Maricopa 1, 5 innings

Elie Magnuson threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out nine to lead the Broncos (2-3, 1-0 CVL).

Patty Bucio hit two home runs, drove in four and scored five times for Coast Union, which also got a home run, two doubles and three RBI from Ashley Martinez and three singles from Maddy May.

Maricopa’s lone run came on an error.


Arroyo Grande 3, Santa Ynez  0

Connor Howard had 12 kills, and Cameron Arnet had 25 assists in the Eagles’ 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 victory.

Keanu Morrison had 10 kills, and Andrew Midyett added eight. Brett MacDonald registered 12 digs for Arroyo Grande (9-6).

Mission Prep 3, Channel Islands 0

Paul Tompkins recorded 18 kills, 10 digs and three blocks for the Royals in their 25-18, 30-28, 25-20 victory.

Jack Mooney had 12 kills and 10 digs for Mission Prep (10-4), and Sean O’Connor registered 30 assists to go along with five digs and two aces.


Paso Robles 432, Cabrillo 439

Freshman Bailey Flickinger shot a match-best 83 to lead the Bearcats past the host Conquistadores at Village Country Club’s par 72.

Classmate Logan Elliot carded an 85, and Greg Potruch shot an 86 for Paso Robles (3-2).


Arroyo Grande 11, Atascadero 7

Derek Lakowske won all but one game in sweeping his singles sets for the Eagles (8-5, 4-0 PAC 7). 

The No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Stier and Andrew Arcangel also won all three of its sets for Arroyo Grande.

The doubles tandem of Elias Jordan and Dylan Head won two of three sets for the Greyhounds. 

San Luis Obispo 17, Paso Robles 1

Two singles players and two doubles teams swept their three sets for the Tigers (11-1, 3-0 PAC 7).

Mason Hansen won all but two games in his singles sweep, and Cameron Dong only dropped three. 

The doubles tandems of Noah Cleere and Alex Dill as well as Pablo Caminada and Adie Alwen both won all three of their sets.

San Luis Obispo will square off against Arroyo Grande — also undefeated in league play — Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Arroyo Grande.

Cabrillo 12, Templeton 6

Chaz Darrow and Matt Jardini both swept their singles sets for the Eagles (3-10, 1-1 LPL).

Darrow won 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, while Jardini won 6-0, 6-1, 6-3.
