College Roundup: Ruck leads Cuesta to softball split

Cuesta College’s Jeananne Ruck hit two two-run homers and pitched a complete game four-hitter as the Cougars took the opener of a  softball doubleheader with Allan Hancock College 5-1.

The Cougars (17-8, 7-2 Western State Conference) dropped the nightcap 3-2.

In the opener, Ruck was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and four RBI. In the pitching circle, she allowed one run, struck out six and walked four.

The Cougars never led in the second game but rallied to tie the score at 2 with both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth, only to see Hancock score the winning run in the sixth.

Cuesta baseball thumped by Oxnard

The Cougars committed four errors and gave up 19 runs in the first five innings in their
25-7 loss at Oxnard.

Cuesta (5-18, 1-9 WSC) used seven pitchers in the game as starter Nick Burnham lasted just two innings, giving up five hits, three walks and 10 runs — six earned.

Nick Rutckyj hit a two-run home run for the Cougars, who scored three runs in the fourth inning, one in the seventh and three in the ninth.

Cal Poly golfers move up one spot

The Cal Poly women’s golf team moved up to 12th place after the second day of the three-day Anuenue Spring Break Classic on The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The Mustangs shot a 306 after firing an opening-round 317 left them in 13th place. 

Cal Poly’s Madison Hirsch, who was in a tie for 26th after the first round, shot a 3-over 75 to move into a tie for 20th place.
