Prep Roundup: Morro Bay outlasts Templeton in softball

Marissa Tabares struck out 13 in 12 innings of work as the Morro Bay High softball team beat Templeton 2-1 in 12 innings Tuesday.

Tabares gave up only four hits for the Pirates (5-4, 1-0 Los Padres League), who got a game-winning RBI single from Tamara Singh, scoring Fallon Molnar in the 12th.

The game was scoreless going into extra innings before the Eagles (3-6, 0-1 LPL) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 11th. 

But Emma Hotaling ran home on an error for Morro Bay in the bottom of the frame to keep the game going, and Singh ended it an inning later. 

Nipomo 26, Santa Maria 0, 5 innings

The Titans (5-4, 1-0 LPL) recorded 20 hits and got a nine-strikeout, one-hit performance in the circle from freshman pitcher Bri Sa.

Every Nipomo starter registered multiple hits, and Anahi Vences, Vangie Lopez and Vanessa Davis each hit two-run doubles. Vences finished with four RBI, and Lopez and Davis both drove in three. 

Coastal Christian 13, Mission Prep 3, 5 innings

Roni Garrison struck out nine and allowed just three hits, five walks and one earned run for the Conquerors (1-0). 

Hannah Brennan drove in three runs, and Leanna Newby went 2 for 3 with three RBI. Amy Arnold and Sara Henschel both recorded three hits for Coastal Christian, and Arnold had two RBI.


Templeton 7, Morro Bay 1

Spencer Howard hit a fourth-inning grand slam to lead the Eagles (3-2, 1-0 LPL) past the Pirates (0-5, 0-1). 

The senior also started on the mound, striking out eight and allowing two hits and an unearned run in six innings.

Austin Alarcon recorded three hits, and Jordan Bernal was 2 for 2 and drove in a run for Templeton.

Paso Robles 8, Mission Prep 5

Christian Erickson went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in three runs for the Bearcats in their win over the Royals. 

Erickson hit a single, double and triple, and also scored twice.

Steven Deaville hit a two-run double for Paso Robles (4-0-1) to put them up 7-1 before Mission Prep (2-4) scored four runs in the fourth inning to come within two. 

Trevor Fernandez was 4 for 4 with three singles and a double for the Royals, driving in a run and stealing two bases. 

Chase Borque went 2 for 3 with two singles for Mission Prep.   

Cabrillo 11, Arroyo Grande 6 

Joey DeLaRosa was 4 for 4 with two RBI for the Eagles in their loss to the Conquistadors. 

Robbie Silva was 3 for 4 for Arroyo Grande (2-3), with one RBI, one run scored and a double.  


San Luis Obispo 3, Morro Bay 0

Shea McSorley and John Duffey both had seven kills for the Tigers (7-3), who topped the Pirates 25-16, 25-17, 25-21. 

Rennie Heza had 22 assists for San Luis Obispo.

San Marcos 3, Arroyo Grande 0

The Royals swept the Eagles 25-10, 25-11, 25-17. 

Jack Empey led Arroyo Grande (8-6) with 10 kills, and Andrew Midyett and Keanu Morrison both added five kills. 

Mission Prep 3, Pioneer Valley 0

Paul Tompkins led the Royals with 19 kills in their 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of the Panthers. 

Sean O’Connor tallied 19 assists and three aces for Mission Prep (7-4), and Jack Mooney added 13 digs and six kills. 

St. Joseph 3, Nipomo 0 

The Knights won 25-8, 25-17, 25-22 against the Titans (0-5). 


Arroyo Grande 9, Righetti 9 (78-68)

Derek Lakowske swept all three sets 6-0, helping the Eagles (6-4, 2-0 PAC 7) defeat the Warriors 78-68 in games after they tied 9-9 in sets. 

The doubles team of Jamieson O’Marr and Skyler Zirpolo won two of three sets for Arroyo Grande.  

Paso Robles 10, Pioneer Valley 8

The Bearcats (5-2, 1-1 PAC 7) double team of Ryan Shepard and Warren Willis swept 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. 

Juan Majano and Xavier Galsim also swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, and Mayor Pohlod won two of three set in singles.

San Luis Obispo 16, Atascadero 2

Cameron Dong won his sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 for the Tigers (9-1, 2-0 PAC 7) against the Greyhounds (7-2). 

The doubles teams of Noah Cleere and Alex Dill and Addie Alwen and Pabloe Caminada both swept their sets for San Luis Obispo. 

Morro Bay 18, Coast Union 0

Andrew Stella swept all three sets 6-0 for the Pirates (3-2) against Coast Union (0-3). 

Andrew Calderwood won 7-5. 6-1, 6-1, and Ryan Morris finished 6-3, 6-0. 6-0 for Morro Bay. 


Boys: Paso Robles 111, Nipomo 74; Girls: Paso Robles 136, Nipomo 37

Sierra Mosely won the girls 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 8.94 seconds and 1:12.35, respectively for Paso Robles (3-0, 3-0 PAC 7).

Ryan Springer won the 200 individual medley in 2:25.14 and the 50 freestyle in 27.08. 

For the Paso Robles boys, Kohl Coffey won the 200 freestyle in 2:02.50 and Mitchell Iunker won the 200 IM in 2:23.36.

Taylor Page won the 500 freestyle in 5:02.18 for the Bearcats (2-1, 1-1 PAC 7). 

Coffee, Iunker, Page and Isiah Baker finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.13.
