College Roundup: Ventura cruises past Cuesta in Western State Conference baseball

Ventura recorded 21 hits, and the Cougars committed six errors as Cuesta College fell 17-8 Tuesday in a matchup of two teams at the bottom of the Western States Conference standings.

Mykel Davis hit an RBI triple, and Nick Rutckyj hit a two-run double for the Cougars (5-15, 1-6 WSC), who fell behind 8-0 after two innings and gave up runs in all but two innings. 

Cuesta used seven pitchers , and only Jackson Gentes threw more than two innings. He struck out three batters, but also allowed three earned runs. Evan Peterson started, but lasted only 1 2⁄3 innings, giving up seven hits and six earned runs.

Frias is honored by the Big West

Cal Poly’s Chris Frias is the Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 3,000-meter run at Saturday’s dual meet against Fresno State. 

Frias ran the race in 8 minutes, 6.66 seconds at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis and finished 23 seconds ahead of the next finisher. 

Frias’ time surpassed teammate Sean Davidson’s time of 8:08.47 for third-best in school history.
