HomeGoods will hold a grand opening for its first San Luis Obispo County location in the Irish Hills Plaza off Los Osos Valley Road on May 18.

The nationwide chain that sells discounted home decor items is taking over the spot vacated when OfficeMax closed late last year. It will join a PetSmart and Old Navy.

Clint Pearce of Madonna Enterprises said the 20,000-square-foot space underwent a massive remodel to better fit the HomeGoods shopping model, including laying new cement inside. Pearce said he did not know how much the renovations cost.

“They are doing a lot of work in there, in very little time,” Pearce said. “It will be a beautiful store when it opens up.”

HomeGoods is owned by TJX Companies, which also owns T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, and is structured similarly to the two stores’ home décor departments.

Pearce said it is unlikely the store will have a soft opening before the grand opening May 18.
