A portion of Orcutt Road near Laurel Lane in San Luis Obispo has been temporarily closed Friday afternoon after the gates of the Union Pacific Railroad crossing became stuck in the downward position.

Both east- and westbound drivers are being told to turn around and find alternate routes.

San Luis Obispo public works staff was on scene, but a call to the department for more information was referred to Union Pacific. A spokesman for Union Pacific was not immediately reachable Friday afternoon, but according to a San Luis Obispo volunteer police officer who was directing traffic on scene, the road is expected to be closed for the next few hours until technicians can fix the gates.
