College Roundup: Cal Poly sets swim school relay record

The Cal Poly men’s swimming team completed the first day of the Pac-12 Conference Championships on Wednesday in Federal Way, Wash., breaking a school record in the process.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Sonny Fierro, Jack Jenner, Mickey Mackle and Alex Behnam swam the event in a Cal Poly-best 

6 minutes, 36.84 seconds — good for eighth place in the meet. The previous record of 6:40.02 had stood for five seasons.

The 200 medley relay team of Mackle, Jimmy Deiparine, Cody Tanabe and Caleb Davies also finished eighth, finishing in 1:31.95.

The meet runs through Saturday.

Former Cuesta diver takes NAIA title

Oklahoma Baptist senior and former Cuesta College diver Kristen Brimage won the women’s 1-meter diving title at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships on Wednesday in Oklahoma City.

Brimage took first by posting a score of 248.85 points. Her teammate, freshman Tara Dewall, placed second in the event with 210.30 points.

Brimage, a Yosemite High graduate, was last year’s 3-meter champion, and will look to defend her title Friday.
