A special tax

San Luis ObispoMarch 5, 2014

I read with interest the front-page article in the March 2 Tribune about renewing Measure Y. I am in favor of renewing Measure Y as a special-purpose tax, not a general-purpose tax.

In the years since its inception, Measure Y funds have been wisely spent on capital improvements such as street repairs, storm drains and bike paths that we all enjoy. Measure Y was helping our community make crucial improvements during a time when many cities had exhausted their resources.

Measure Y has proved that it works. I agree with Mr. John Fowler that if San Luis Obispo citizens pay this special tax, we should have a voice in how these monies are spent within our community.

The Tribune is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
