A real example

San Luis ObispoMarch 3, 2014

In his commentary of Feb. 24, Paul Krugman said that nobody has ever come up with a real example of anyone losing the family farm due to estate taxes. I can give you names to contact here in San Luis Obispo County who can tell you directly that farmers are deeply affected by estate taxes.

The town of Cambria has a relatively new open-space park called East West Ranch or the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. It is the former ranch of the Fiscalini family that found itself facing a $2 million tax liability after several family members died and left their shares of the family ranch to surviving members. They sold the ranch to a nonprofit land conservancy and turned the check over to the federal government. They are not alone.

I’m a deeply committed independent leaning toward liberalism, never having missed an election in 63 years voting. In this case, you did not do your homework.
