Local organizers say questions about how the Amgen Tour of California will be handled, including the impact on Cambria’s depleted water supply, will be answered at a community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St., Cambria.
The eight-stage, 740-mile professional bicycle race runs May 11 to 18. The fourth stage on May 14 starts in Monterey and finishes in Cambria, the first time the unincorporated town has hosted a start or finish. The race passed through Cambria three times from 2006 to 2008.
“This race provides a platform for residents to join together and showcase their city to the world,” said Guy Savage, assistant county administrative officer and cochairman of the local organizing committee. “Coastal communities continue to thrive because of the economic impact tourists bring to the region. Not only does the Tour bring visitors into town for the race, it is a catalyst for putting these cities on the map.”
County Supervisor Bruce Gibson will host the meeting.
Tour organizers will talk about the race, race routes, street closures, race-related water conservation efforts and community events related to the race. There will be a period set aside for questions and answers.
Organizers say they are supporting local causes and are mindful of community concerns. They have committed to protecting water resources in the community.
Cambria will host a Breakaway from Cancer walk on west Main Street the day of the race. Breakaway from Cancer is a national initiative to increase awareness of resources available to people affected by cancer.
Anyone wishing to volunteer as a local course marshal can sign up on the Amgen website at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/footer/volunteer, or call local volunteer coordinator Susan McDonald at 927-4274. A total of about 85 volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles, from media assistance to hospitality to security.
A second community meeting is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, also at the Veterans Memorial Building.
