After jumping nine spots in the Baseball America rankings this week to No. 13, the Cal Poly baseball team headed north to take on San Jose State on Tuesday and came away with a 5-3 victory.

Justin Calomeni was on the mound for the Mustangs (7-1), striking out seven and walking one in seven innings. Calomeni retired the last 10 batters he faced after giving up three runs in the first two innings.

With Cal Poly down 3-2, Jimmy Allen and John Schuknecht hit back-to-back doubles in the third inning to tie the score.

Peter Van Gansen followed with an RBI single to right-center field later in the inning to score the go-ahead run.

Nick Torres hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 5-3.

Cuesta 8-5, Porterville 1-6

The Cougars split a doubleheader with the Pirates.

Erin Pennington hit a three-run triple and scored two runs in the 8-1 first-game victory.

Nichole Johnson pitched the entire game for Cuesta (13-8).

The Cougars’ offense did not pick up in the second game until the seventh inning, when Gabby Massari hit a three-run double that scored Bre Ojala, Savanna Johnson and Summer Best to pull Cuesta within one.

Delaney Furnish started the game in the circle, and Jeananne Ruck came in for relief in the fifth inning.
