Close bridge to traffic

OceanoFebruary 24, 2014

I would like to comment on the Bridge Street bridge dilemma in Arroyo Grande (Feb. 18, “Span Garners Support”).

At this point, I don’t think it would be cost-effective or even possible for the bridge to be brought into compliance with today’s road width, load limits and seismic requirements and still preserve the Pratt truss integrity and appearance.

What I would propose instead is to do nothing and close the bridge to vehicular traffic, except for emergencies or during maintenance/ inspections of the Mason Street bridge (which will absorb the Bridge Street traffic).

The Bridge Street bridge would continue to serve as a pedestrian and bicycle crossing; thus remaining a cultural and historical structure for the community. It should also be listed as a National Historical Site under criteria A (associative history) and C (architectural significance).
