Mundell homers again, helps Mustangs go to 6-1 while dominating defending national champions for second consecutive day

Brian Mundell and Nick Torres combined for five hits and five RBI to power Cal Poly’s baseball team to a 9-1 victory at UCLA on Sunday, clinching the three-game series for the Mustangs over the defending national champion Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Mundell belted a two-run home run in the first inning, the sophomore designated hitter’s third homer of the series, and finished 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Torres hit a two-run single in the third inning to give the Mustangs a 5-1 lead. The junior right fielder went 5 for 13 with six RBI in the series.

Cal Poly, ranked No. 22 in the most recent Baseball America poll, improved to 6-1, while No. 12 UCLA fell to 4-3.

Jimmy Allen, Zack Zehner and Chris Hoo added two hits each for the Mustangs, who outhit the Bruins 12-6.

Mustangs starter Casey Bloomquist (2-0) was the winning pitcher. The sophomore right-hander allowed one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings.

Cal Poly’s Taylor Chris pitched three scoreless innings of relief, and Reed Reilly tossed a scoreless ninth.

The Mustangs turned three double plays and played errorless defense for the third time on the season.

SOFTBALL

Cal Poly splits pair of tourney games

Cal Poly (7-9) wrapped the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic by splitting a doubleheader, with a 6-1 win over New Mexico, then a 6-0 loss to UNLV in Cathedral City.

Mustangs freshman right-hander Sierra Hyland pitched a three-hitter with one walk and nine strikeouts in the win over the Lobos. Cal Poly’s Jillian Andersen went 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Hyland, Emily Ceccacci and Ashley Romano had two hits apiece.

UNLV’s Morgan Ettinger tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts in the nightcap.

Late Saturday, Hyland pitched a no-hitter with five walks and 12 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Maryland.

MEN’S GOLF

Cal Poly 10th at tourney

Cal Poly finished 10th in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Mustangs carded a 1-over-par 865 team total, with the title going to Oregon at 837.

Former Arroyo Grande High standout Mitchell Martin led Cal Poly, tying for 19th place with a 3-under 213 total. The individual medalist was Texas Christian’s Julien Brun at 13-under 203.
