Letter to the Editor

Feed humans first

San Luis ObispoFebruary 19, 2014

I saw your front-page article and photo showing Barack Obama talking with Central Valley farmers. Obama wants people to think he is concerned about the plight of farmers. I also read the editorial the same day in Investor’s Business Daily in which farmers described the Obama trip as “grandstanding.”

As usual, Obama wants to throw money at the problem. Central Valley farmer Devin Nunes says, “We are not interested in welfare; we want water.” Obama has supported the environmentalists who have convinced the federal government to flush 3 million acre-feet of water originally slated for the Central Valley into the ocean over the past five years to help the delta smelt and salmon fishery.

I have been a fisherman all my life and support California salmon fishermen. However, if there is a question about whether we send water to farmers who feed America, or use the water to protect fish, it is no contest. Feeding humans is more important.

If Obama cared about the farmers, he would support House Bill 3964, which would send water to Central Valley farmers instead of sending it out to the ocean. The House has already passed this bill, but Senate Democrats are blocking it.
