Goalkeeper’s diving save propels Eagles boys soccer team to wild-card win

Arroyo Grande High boys soccer goalkeeper Danny Montero made a diving save on Los Amigos’ fifth penalty kick to lift the Eagles to a 1-1 (4-3 penalty kicks) road victory Tuesday in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. 

The Eagles (15-6-2) trailed 1-0 at the start of the second half, when Montero’s punt assisted Josh Wilkens’ breakaway goal in the 57th minute to tie the game. 

Arroyo Grande held an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team could find the go-ahead tally in two overtime periods.

Cassidy put the Eagles ahead 4-3 in the final round, when Montero’s save ended the game.

The Eagles play at 3 p.m. Thursday at Baldwin Park.

Paso Robles 2, Nogales 2 (5-4 PK)

Rafael Roman forced overtime with a tying goal in the final 10 minutes and added the winning penalty kick to lift the Bearcats (13-11) to a Division 5 wild-card road victory.

Roman also assisted on Juan Pino’s goal that put Paso Robles ahead 1-0 in the first half.

Kirby Walton, Matthew Mehilic, Pino and Jose Ojeda scored penalty kicks before Roman’s winner.

Juan Carlos Ruiz finished with five saves for the Bearcats.

Paso Robles will take on Granite Hills in Apple Valley on Thursday at 3 p.m. 

Eastside 1, Templeton 1 (3-1 PK)

Jeffrey Hammond scored the game’s first goal, but it wasn’t enough to lift the host Eagles in a Division 3 wild-card match.

Yusuke Yokota made eight saves for Templeton (8-11-2). 

Templeton missed its first two penalty kicks before Andrew Heim converted the third. Eastside made its first two shots, missed the third, but made the fourth to end the game.


Charter Oak 16, Paso Robles 6

Shannon Rees scored three goals for the Bearcats (12-16), who fell in the Division 3 wild-card round. Laileha Vermy, Lauren Sowerby and Zoe Zepp each had one goal, and Kelsey Lewis had nine saves. 

Downey 16, Morro Bay 5

Katie White scored three goals for the Pirates (4-12), who lost on the road in the wild-card round of the Division 5 playoffs.

Tori White and Miranda Galindo also scored for Morro Bay, and Taryn Nunes made eight saves.


Arroyo Grande standout to play at Air Force

Jack Empey, a standout senior on the Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team, will continue his athletic and academic careers at the Air Force Academy, Eagles coach Steven Allen announced Tuesday.

Empey had 115 goals and 20 assists in 32 games this past season, leading Arroyo Grande to a 23-9 record and a spot in the CIF-Southern Section semifinals. 

Arroyo Grande athletic director Dwight MacDonald said Empey will be honored at the school’s spring signing day ceremony.
