College Baseball: Torres, Calomeni help ignite 8-0 Cal Poly win

Torres has three RBI, Calomeni fans nine in first collegiate start, and Mustangs improve to 4-0 with road win over Santa Clara

Right fielder Nick Torres drove in three runs, and freshman Justin Calomeni struck out nine in his first collegiate start as the No. 22 Cal Poly baseball team remained undefeated with an 8-0 win at Santa Clara on Tuesday. 

Left fielder Zach Zehner hit a third-inning solo home run to open the scoring, and 

Torres brought in two more runs later in the inning with a double. Torres also had a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Mustangs (4-0) a five-run lead.

Calomeni threw 76 pitches, yielding one hit in five innings. 

Cal Poly had 11 hits, including a single and double from leadoff batter Tim Wise, who scored three runs.  

Hartnell 5, Cuesta 2

Shortstop David Belt went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Cougars (3-7), who failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded opportunity in the seventh inning in the road loss.

Cuesta, which used six pitchers, scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and the RBI hit from Belt, which scored Tyler Klipfel.

Hartnell scored four runs in the fifth inning on four singles and a double.
