Consider this, NIMBYs

San Luis ObispoFebruary 17, 2014

Architectural rendering of Monterey Place and the historic Leitcher House.

I don’t know Bill Walters personally, but I wish the Tribune would toss him a bouquet. He owns a historic property across from the Monterey Place redevelopment project just approved by the San Luis Obispo City Council.

His gracious comments about accepting change downtown are noteworthy because of the rarity of having a homeowner near a larger project acknowledge that our city will always be changing — not always for the better, but often enough that we keep trying. I applaud this man and hope that I could be as gracious if it were a change that affected me. I have lived in cities, towns, suburbs and gated communities.

The more “exclusive” the community, the more hostility to change I have seen. I believe urban neighbors have to accommodate each other, and I applaud Bill for setting a great example for the rest of us NIMBY types to consider.

The Tribune is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
