Colburn, Hyland help Mustangs cap Stanford tourney with victory

Sophomore designated player Betsey Colburn hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning to break up a pitchers’ duel and help Cal Poly softball freshman pitcher Sierra Hyland to her first collegiate victory, a 3-0 defeat of Bradley on Sunday’s final day of the Stanford Nike Invitational.

Hyland struck out six in the one-hit shutout and followed the triple by driving in Colburn with a single of her own for the Mustangs (4-6), who play No. 15 Texas to open the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City on Thursday.

Cuesta softball splits doubleheader

The Cuesta College softball team split a doubleheader on the final day of the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament.

The Cougars opened with a 7-4 victory over Imperial Valley as Gabby Massari was 2 for 2 with a double, a home run and two RBI.

Cuesta (11-5) fell 9-6 to College of the Desert in the nightcap.

Santa Clara edges Cal Poly women’s tennis

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team took the doubles point from Santa Clara but fell 4-3 at home.

Emily Gibbens and Savaka Tsugai cruised to an 8-2 doubles win, and Kathryn Webb and Mika Padmanabhan eked out an 8-7 victory to put the Mustangs ahead, but the Broncos came back to take four of the six singles matches.
