Assistant County Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong has officially announced his candidacy for clerk-recorder to succeed Julie Rodewald when she retires at the end of the year.

Gong, 48, has served as the No. 2 official in the office for the past nine years. He has received endorsements from numerous elected officials in San Luis Obispo County, including Supervisors Adam Hill and Debbie Arnold and mayors Jamie Irons of Morro Bay, Shelly Higginbotham of Pismo Beach and Tom O’Malley of Atascadero.

Gong said his highest priorities will be maintaining the integrity of the office and conducting fair and transparent elections. He has completed the California Professional Election Administrator Certification program and has conducted dozens of elections in the county since 2005.

“As clerk-recorder, I will continue the great legacy of dedicated and unbiased public service established by Julie over the last 20 years,” he said.

In addition to running elections, Gong has overseen other responsibilities of the office including budgeting, procuring and managing grants, negotiating contracts and implementing new systems.

The period for declaring candidacy for elected offices in San Luis Obispo County ends March 12. The primary election will take place in June. So far, no one else has announced their candidacy for clerk-recorder.

Rodewald announced in January that she will not be seeking re-election. She said she will not be endorsing a candidate in keeping with the apolitical nature of the office.

The job pays $135,657 a year.
