The Feb. 7 paper reported that House Speaker John Boehner has backed off on immigration reform because he doesnt think a bill could pass in the House. Actually, thats just as well, since what the Republicans seem to mean by immigration reform is increased security and various punitive measures, rather than a path to citizenship. And were there to be a path, it would be strewn with boulders and lined with thorns.
Millions of illegal immigrants have made the United States their home, some of them like those I have tutored in English, have been here for many years and are not going to return to their countries of origin.
Our current system leaves them in limbo and living in fear with the constant threat of deportation yes, we do need to tighten border security but thats only one part of what should be comprehensive , not piecemeal, immigration reform.
