Uncertainty strategy

San Luis ObispoFebruary 13, 2014

Atascadero City Council members and proud climate-change deniers Roberta Fonzi and Heather Moreno start by saying “science is never ‘settled.’ ” They end by saying “it is essential that proponents prove their case before public policies are put into place,” and “in time, the science will be supported or refuted.”

The science of climate change has been “supported” for decades. “In time,” we will be underwater on an unlivable planet. And Fonzi and Moreno still won’t admit they were wrong because, following their incoherent argument to its logical conclusion, no public policies can ever be based on science because science is never “settled.”

Fonzi and Moreno are employing the favorite “uncertainty” strategy of Exxon Mobil, a strategy previously used by the tobacco industry.
