Enforce code on bikers

AtascaderoFebruary 10, 2014

This is in response to Phil Middleton and Lea Brook’s one-sided letters on bike riders’ rights of Jan. 21.

Mr. Middleton quotes the California State Vehicle Code Section 21200 that states: “A person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle.”

I have been riding bicycles for more than 50 years (in Europe for nine weeks, from Canada to Mexico, Los Angeles to Boston, Disneyland to Disney World, San Francisco to Pueblo, Colo. and all over the state of California). Not a day goes by that bicycle riders don’t break many different provisions of the traffic code. They run stop signs, ride the wrong way on streets, ride on sidewalks, wear dark clothes at night without lights and generally think they own the road. Well, they do not.

I have a solution for bike riders’ rights: Let’s start enforcing the vehicle code on all bicycle riders with the same fine for tickets, and that should solve any issues that concern Phil and Lea.
