Officials are warning San Luis Obispo County residents of a phone scam that is attempting to solicit personal information from citizens under the guise of a fundraiser for the Atascadero Fire Department.

Atascadero Fire Capt. Bill White said Wednesday that a number of residents from different areas of the county have reported to department officials receiving calls asking to make a donation over the phone for the department to purchase fire equipment.

White said that no fundraising effort is currently underway and encouraged community members to never give any personal information over the phone without first confirming with that organization that such a campaign is underway.

“We will always put out a press release to let people know that these are legitimate calls and not some fly-by-night operation,” White said.

Residents are asked to call their local police departments if they receive such a phone call.
