Steve Provosts article, Sherman a poor communicator (Jan. 22) doesnt go far enough. In a video, Richard Sherman stated that football is a barbaric sport, and that justifies his barbarism on the field and off. These days, a few coaches are encouraging their players to make it a blood sport, maiming and injuring as many men as possible. There have always been injuries in football, but coaches Vince Lombardi, Knute Rockne and Bill Walsh would shudder to see the unnecessary brutality committed on every play. The athletes have become thugs.
And you cant ignore the Seahawks fans, a mad, blood-hungry audience that brings back the days of Roman gladiators fighting to the death in Rome. The sight of Seattle fans throwing popcorn and debris on a wounded 49er player is disgusting. The deafening roar they create is stupid and disrespectful. As an American, I am ashamed of them, and I hope that the game was not broadcast to the rest of the world. It is the end of a terrific sport that always was exciting to watch.
