The San Luis Obispo Symphony has a new interim executive director.

Maryellen Simkins will oversee the nonprofit until a new executive director is found. She succeeds Jim Black, who stepped down in August after about two years at the post to focus on “family commitments and responsibilities.”

In a news release, Simkins said her presence will aid the symphony in its search for a permanent replacement.

“Our goal is to resume our search in the not-too-distant future and to keep the symphony running on all cylinders in preparation for the new executive director’s arrival,” she said.

A retired legal administrator, Simkins now serves as a management consultant for nonprofit and for-profit entities, specializing in executive searches, human resources and team building.

Simkins has worked closely with organizations including the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center and San Luis Obispo Little Theatre. She currently serves as president of the board of directors of the PCPA Foundation.
