Climate action

AtascaderoJanuary 27, 2014

On Jan. 14, the Atascadero City Council received a climate action plan approved by staff and the Planning Commission. It provided the scientific rationale for the plan, and the best scientific projections of climate change for this area. Identical language regarding the basic science was adopted by Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande.

But council members Heather Moreno and Roberta Fonzi decided that the best science available was “just opinion” and struck out whole sections they found “politically charged.” Censuring science for political purposes, whether by Lysenko in Russia (inflicting damage on their agricultural progress) or today, is damaging to any community.

On Tuesday, the matter will be reconsidered. Citizens who want a forward-looking, progressive city should tell the council to adopt the original draft and leave the science to the scientists.
