Construction of bridge, tunnel on Hwy. 1 near Lucia is complete

A four-year, nearly $40 million project to build a bridge and rock-shed tunnel on Highway 1 near Lucia is complete.

Caltrans announced last week that the one-fourth-mile stretch of road near Pitkins Curve in Monterey County is now open to traffic in both directions.

The area, about 20 miles north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey County line, has been notorious for its washouts.

The new structure is intended to keep falling rocks and slides off the roadway, reducing the chance of a highway closure.

The project also includes a retaining wall.

According to Caltrans, the rock-shed is the only roadway structure of its kind in the country.
