San Miguel Library gets a new computer just for kids

Special to The TribuneJanuary 23, 2014

Lynne Schmitz

This month, the San Miguel Library received a very special computer for children ages 2 to 8. The Foundation for the San Luis Obispo County Public Libraries awarded our library the computer purchased with a Barbara Baltimore Library Endowment Grant. The AWE Early Literacy Station is an all-in-one bilingual (Spanish-English) digital teaching tool that uses games and lively graphics to teach as it entertains.

More than 60 educational programs are preloaded, such as Math Blaster and Dora the Explorer. It is not connected to the Internet and is safe for the children to use. The software spans seven areas of curricula.

Also, the San Miguel Library is participating in the winter reading program, “Hot Reads for Cold Nights, California Style,” which started Jan. 15. Read nine books from the categories by April 15 and receive “prizes and surprises.”

Visit your local library for details. San Miguel Library hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and noon to 6 p.m. Thursday. Check it out!

Bingo and Bowl

Friday at 6:30 p.m. is bingo at the San Miguel Senior Center on East 12th Street (off N Street east of the railroad tracks).

The seniors will host a Super Bowl party on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2; watch for details next week.
