Ocean View Furniture in Morro Bay will close April 30 so that its owners may retire, management announced Thursday.

The store has been a fixture in Morro Bay since 1972, when owners Steve and Kathy Semas bought the space. Before that, another family-owned furniture store had been in the location for 11 years.

Steve Semas, who employs two other workers besides himself and Kathy at the store at 2200 Main Street, said business has been doing well over the past several years, in spite of the economic downturn.

Because of this, he said he wanted to “leave while business is good.”

“You go out on top, not on bottom,” Semas said. “We’ve been at this for a long time, and now it’s time to retire.”

Semas declined to disclose annual revenue, but said revenue in 2013 was the store’s best in its 41 years.

Semas and his wife are liquidating the business rather than selling it, and they will rent out the vacant space. They do not have any definite tenants as of yet.

Semas said he will most miss the people and customers he encountered at the store.

“Customers over the years have become personal friends,” he said. “We’ll continue to stay in contact with them.”
