A woman was the victim of an attempted sexual assault early Jan. 7 on Perimeter Road, the University Police Department at Cal Poly said in a community alert Tuesday.

The woman reported she was walking from the A1 parking lot toward the University Union about 12:30 a.m. when she was attacked by an unidentified assailant.

The attacker put a pillow case or bag over the woman’s head for the purpose of assaulting her sexually, police said. The victim was able to escape and did not see the assailant, who fled in an unknown direction.

The university has issued a crime alert in response to the incident. Alerts are issued to notify the community about serious crimes that occur on or near campus to promote safety and enable community members to take protective measures.
