District Attorney Gerry Shea has endorsed his second in command, Tim Covello, to succeed him as San Luis Obispo County’s lead prosecutor, according to a news release from Covello’s campaign.

Covello, the assistant district attorney, and Deputy District Attorney Dan Dow are the only two candidates to announce an intention to run for the seat, which will be vacated when Shea steps down at the end of his term next January.

The election will be held on June 30.

Both candidates boast numerous endorsements. Dow’s endorsements include most of the current deputy district attorneys, the Atascadero Police Association and County Supervisor Frank Mecham. Covello’s endorsements include Pismo Beach Police Chief Jeff Norton, several retired detectives from the county District Attorney’s Office and former San Luis Obispo police Chief Jim Gardiner.
