Operators at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant have reduced the power output of Unit 2 to 50 percent in order to clean the unit’s ocean water intake tunnels.

The reduction in power took place early Friday and is expected to last several days, plant spokesman Blair Jones said. The plant’s other reactor is operating at full power.

“This is standard and planned work performed during an operating cycle,” Jones said. “It is done to prevent a buildup of ocean debris and biological growth in the tunnels.”
